An investigation is underway after two swastika images were found inside a bathroom stall in Jefferson Middle School in the Mt. Lebanon School District.

Principal Sarah Shaw sent a letter to families Tuesday alerting them to the second drawing. The first drawing had been found March 2, and an investigation with Mt. Lebanon Police Department began immediately, according to a previous letter.

“The administration will take appropriate disciplinary action for those found responsible for this incident,” Shaw said in the March 9 message.

The swastika symbol of the German Nazi Party in World War II is often used by modern-day hate groups as expressions of anti-Semitism. Shaw said the use of the symbol will be discussed with students, and she also shared resources from the Anti-Defamation League about discussing bias and prejudice with children.

“We value that Jefferson Middle School includes students and families from many backgrounds,” Shaw wrote. “We have and will continue to act swiftly to address any issues that violate our policies and practices of nondiscrimination. There is zero-tolerance for discriminatory behavior in our school.

“Should you have any information that may assist us in our investigation, please contact the MLPD or the school administration.”
