A light rail car caught fire with six riders on board Wednesday at the South Hills Village station, according to Pittsburgh Regional Transit.

In a social media post shortly after 2 p.m., the transit authority said the Bethel Park station was evacuated because of “a fire on a rail car caused by the overhead power lines.”

Six passengers who were on the car got off safely and were not injured, officials said.

The light rail system resumed regular service by 9 p.m.

The light rail system is back to regular service as of 9pm. Outbound rail cars are back to serving outbound platforms and inbound rail cars are back to serving inbound platforms between South Hills Village and Washington Junction.

Spokesman Adam Brandolph said Wednesday evening they were still trying to determine the cause of the fire. A possible cause given was a spark from an overhead power line.

More information was not immediately available.

UPDATE: There were six passengers on the car. They exited the vehicle and were not injured. Red/Blue rail service is currently operating only to Washington Junction. We're working on getting shuttle buses to operate between Washington Jctn and SHV https://t.co/2AjOq76aWE
