Clients of South Hills Interfaith Movement’s Bethel Park food pantry got a little extra in their bags on Thursday as nearby Bethel Bakery donated nearly 200 loaves of bread for those struggling due to the covid-19 outbreak.

“We were more than glad to do it,” Certified Master Baker Tom Walsh said of the donation.

SHIM’s food pantry usually is located inside but was moved outdoors this week for the health and safety of volunteers and clients. On Thursday, cars lined up in the organization’s parking lot where volunteers loaded items, including the fresh-baked bread, into trunks and back seats.

“Covid-19 is already hurting countless people in the South Hills,” SHIM executive director Jim Guffey said in a release. “Unfortunately, the weeks and months ahead are likely to be even more challenging, especially for our most vulnerable neighbors.”

The drive-thru pantry will be open again on Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. To register to use the pantry, contact Molly Penderville at 412-854-9120 ext. 108 or email mpatterson@shimcares.org.
