Baldwin-Whitehall High School’s class of 2020 will have the graduation ceremony that district leaders had hoped for — despite some last-minute changes due to increasing numbers of coronavirus cases in Allegheny County.

On July 1 — rain date July 2 — three separate groups of students will receive their diplomas at Baldwin Whitehall Stadium.

Back in April, the district said that it didn’t want to do a virtual ceremony.

“Being able to host a ceremony that’s reflective of our traditions and of the caliber the Baldwin High School class of 2020 deserves feels like a triumphant end to an extremely challenging year for everyone,” Superintendent Dr. Randal Lutz said. “At the same time, it is vitally important that we follow all recommended safety procedures during this event. Coming together to celebrate the achievements of our 80th graduating class is a powerful expression of unity, and so is acting responsibly to strictly follow our established safeguards for the continued health of our community.”

Social distancing guidelines for those not in the same household will be followed and masks will be required for all in attendance. Additionally, all participants must sign a waiver stating that they do not have covid-19 or its symptoms and that they will not hold the district responsible if they do come down with the virus following the ceremony.

Each graduating senior received two tickets. Those without tickets will not be admitted.

The processions will begin at 4:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., depending on the graduates’ last names. Each ceremony will be livestreamed on the district’s website.

Baldwin-Whitehall School District communications consultant Carrie Butler cautioned that these plans could change through July 1 depending on the covid-19 situation. She said those seeking the latest information should visit bwschools.net.
