Leetsdale officials considering new borough seal

Leetsdale’s proposed new borough seal

A proposed logo change in Leetsdale has elected officials at odds over the new design.

Both seals feature “Borough of Leetsdale Incorporated March 28, 1904” written in black framed on a yellow circle inside two black.

The current seal, which was unveiled in 2005, also has a coat of arms in the center of the lower portion of the circle.

Other images on the current seal include five stars on top of an eagle perched on what appears to be the Liberty Bell. There is an American flag to the bird’s right and a borough flag to its left. A locomotive rolls in front of a brick wall and what is either blue sky or a river just under the bell.

Councilman Roger Nanni, who has served on council for decades, said he could not recall any other borough logo prior to that one.

The proposed design features no flags or bells. The predominant eagle looks like an indistinguishable silhouette of a bird flying in the background.

The brick wall behind the train appears to be a retaining wall next to a lake to the side of the train, which is much larger and rolls out from the right of the logo.

The coat of arms at the bottom of the logo was replaced by a star, and circle is a slightly darker color.

A motion to approve the proposed design failed by a 3-2-1 vote Feb. 9.

Councilmen Osman Awad and Nanni dissented.

Vice president Maria Napolitano, who had been the driving force behind the website update, abstained because she “didn’t want to impose” on the logo’s adoption.

Council president Patricia Lee was absent.

Borough solicitor Daniel Conlon said the motion needed at least four members voting in favor to pass it.

The image adjustment is part of an ongoing redesign of the borough website, leetsdaleboro.net.

The new site has been under construction for several months by Kansas-based web development business CivicPlus.

The goal is to make the site more user friendly easily updatable. Napolitano and borough administrators recently underwent training on how to use the site, which is expected to launch sometime this month.

Cost of the website subscription is about $3,970 per year. Borough officials signed the contract in August.

The new logo was not only to be used on its front page, but on official borough letterhead.

“The new logo was designed for the new website since the old one no longer had any type of reusable design stored on or off a computer,” James said. “Maria lead the change and had offered a version to council months ago to make suggestions and other opinions. It was a shame it was voted down after her hard work.”

Nanni said he opposed the design because it took out the bell and made the eagle unimportant. Awad did not approve of the removal of the national flag.

“It has to be in there,” Awad said after the meeting. “That’s a symbol of the country. People died for the flag.”

Mayor Sandra Ford, who would only have to vote in the event of a tie, said she also wanted the flags kept as part of the seal.

The logo is expected to be up for reconsideration at the next voting session March 9.

Council announced Cleanup Day is set for 9 a.m. to noon on April 23.

Volunteers are needed for the occasion. Participants can meet at the borough office for a continental breakfast. Garbage bags and gloves will be provided. Lunch featuring hotdogs will conclude the event.

Registration is not required. However, people who sign up by March 17 will get a t-shirt.

Borough engineer Daniel Slagle announced bids were received for this year’s paving project. He said they will be reviewed by his office and the solicitor prior to council’s vote next month.

Projected paving includes Davis Avenue, parking lots of the borough building and Henle Park along with milling/repaving the trenches for the Edgeworth Water Authority and Leetsdale Sewage Authority projects.
