UPMC reports $24 billion in revenue in 2021
UPMC reported Monday that it posted $24 billion in operating revenue in 2021, up $1 billion, or about 4.3%, from the year before.
Despite the increased revenue, the health care giant said that its overall operating income for last year totaled $843 million, down 4% from the year before.
UPMC also reported that its insurance division grew by 3% last year and now includes 4.1 million members, making it the largest health insurance provider in Western Pennsylvania. UPMC now has about 32% of the insurance market in Western Pennsylvania.
“UPMC’s successfully integrated provider-insurer model enables our organization to be strong and nimble in fulfilling our mission of always providing the very best, value-based clinical care, even during challenging times,” said UPMC Health Plan president Diane Holder in a news release.
Holder said UPMC has seen “significant growth” in the health care provider’s special needs programs for Medicare and Medicaid. She said UPMC has 60% of Western Pennsylvania’s Medicaid market.
She said she was proud of the growth of UPMC Health Plan.
Officials also highlighted the $1.7 billion in IRS-guided community benefits for the 2020 fiscal year, including investments in affordable housing, contributions to a new homeless shelter for Downtown Pittsburgh and a workforce development program.
UPMC has come under criticism over the years for its nonprofit status and whether it is providing enough community benefits since it doesn’t pay local property taxes. Mayor Ed Gainey campaigned on challenging UPMC’s nonprofit status in court.
When asked if UPMC has met with the Gainey administration since he assumed office in January, UPMC spokeswoman Susan Manko said, “We have had and will continue to have positive and productive discussions with Mayor Gainey about how UPMC can keep providing outstanding clinical care and community services to meet the many diverse needs of residents of the city and the entire region.”
