UPMC has tapped Frederick Hargett as its executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective Oct. 1, succeeding Edward Karlovich.

Hargett comes to UPMC from Novant Health, Inc., a Winston-Salem, N.C.-based health system that encompasses 16 medical centers, more than 1,900 physicians and outpatient surgery centers, rehabilitation programs, diagnostic imaging centers and community health outreach programs.

Karlovich announced his retirement earlier this year.

During Hargett’s tenure as CFO, Novant grew from a $1.5 billion organization to an $8 billion organization, expanding clinical programs and services into more areas.

“I am pleased that our team has recruited such an outstanding fiscal expert and leader with tremendous experience steering long-term diversified strategic growth while stewarding core financial functions of daily operations,” said Leslie Davis, president and CEO, UPMC, in a statement. “With our shared vision to continue growing access to UPMC’s care, I am grateful Fred has chosen to join us, and I am pleased to welcome him to UPMC.”

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Hargett earned undergraduate degrees in public health and business administration, a master’s degree in accounting at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is a certified public accountant. He spent more than seven years at Ernst & Young as a growth strategy advisor to health systems before joining Novant Health.
