The United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania is looking for 500 volunteers to complete tax returns for low-income families during the 2020 tax season.

Volunteers are needed at sites across Allegheny, Westmoreland, Fayette, Greene and Washington counties.

Tax preparation experience isn’t required.

“A tax refund can have a significant impact on a low-income family, which can mean the difference between putting food on the table, keeping the heat on and having transportation to get to work – or not,” said Alena Anderson, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s United for Families Program Manager.

Volunteers must sign up before Jan. 1. at swpafreetaxes.org.

Households with an annual income up to $55,000 may qualify for free tax preparation, according to the United Way. Free online tax assistance is available for individuals and families with a total annual income up to $60,000.

Appointments for free tax preparation can be made beginning Jan. 9 by calling 211 or visiting pa211sw.org.
