U.S. Steel is laying off more than 100 workers as the Pittsburgh steel maker changes its IT operations.

According to a WARN notice filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, the Pittsburgh steelmaker is letting go of 105 workers, primarily at a location on the South Side.

U.S. Steel said it began restructuring its IT functions on Nov. 1.

“These decisions are never easy, and we are deeply grateful to those employees who will be leaving U. S. Steel,” Spokesperson Amanda Malkowski said in a statement. “Our focus is on treating our colleagues with dignity and respect during this transition and as they exit the organization in the weeks and months ahead.”

WARN, or the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, is federal legislation that requires companies with more than 100 employees to provide notice 60 days in advance of a business closing and or mass layoff.

During its third quarter earnings call last week, U.S. Steel said it is still reviewing bids to buy part or all of the iconic Pittsburgh-based company.

Among those offers was one from rival Cleveland-Cliffs. U.S. Steel rejected a $7.3 billion buyout proposal from Cleveland-Cliffs on Aug. 13, saying Cleveland-Cliffs was pushing it to accept the terms without being allowed to conduct proper due diligence. It also said it had received “multiple unsolicited proposals” for the company’s assets. Sewickley-based industrial conglomerate Esmark made an offer of $7.8 billion.

The steelmaker reported third-quarter 2023 net earnings of $299 million, or $1.20 per diluted share.
