The U.S. Postal Service is hiring temporary workers to fill mail handling and processing positions at various locations in Western Pennsylvania, the agency announced Monday.

People are needed to serve as mail handler assistants, mail processing clerk assistants, clerk assistants and city carrier assistants, according to the postal service. The jobs pay hourly rates range from $16.21 to $17.29, the postal service said

“The U.S. Postal Service is looking to hire more employees to help us to continue providing critical postal services to the nation and we are doing so in accordance with our existing hiring practices on a local basis, as our needs dictate,” spokeswoman Jill S. Walters said.

She said the postal service often hires on an as-needed basis. Walters did not address whether there has been attrition within the postal service.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and are subject to a background investigation and medical assessment.

Applicants should click the “save” tab after completing an online application and make sure to electronically submit the application. Applicants will be contacted via email.

Walters said the agency is closely monitoring the coronavirus pandemic and following strategies and measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health departments.

“We are sharing the CDC’s guidance to our employees via stand-up talks, employee news articles, messages on bulletin boards, videos and an intranet site directly to employees and within USPS workplaces,” she said. “The postal service has so far experienced only minor operational impacts in the United States as a result of the covid-19 pandemic.”

The service has temporarily suspended its guarantee on priority mail to China and Hong Kong because of airline cancellations and restrictions. Customers could experience delays in mail and packages destined to and from China and European countries subject to restricted airline travel.
