What food has no beginning, end or middle?

Stumped?

Here’s another one: What kind of nut has a hole?

National Doughnut Day falls on the first Friday in June each year and there are specials and freebies offered throughout the region. The holiday was established in 1938 by the Salvation Army to recognize the organization’s Donut Lassies, women who traveled to France to serve the treats and other snacks to soldiers during World War I.

No matter how it’s spelled — doughnut or donut — today is arguably the sweetest holiday of the year and local shops are taking part in the celebrations.

Dunkin’ is offering a free doughnut with a drink purchase all day Friday.

Krispy Kreme is offering a free doughnut per customer with no purchase necessary. Customers can also purchase a dozen doughnuts and get a second dozen of original glazed for $2.

Peace, Love and Little Donuts in the Strip District, Wexford and McKees Rocks is offering a free 12-ounce hot coffee and a free Groovy Donut, the shop’s staple cinnamon sugar doughnut with no purchase necessary.

Taco Bell is joining in with the deals, offering a free order of cinnamon twists on Friday with a purchase of $20 or more on DoorDash, Uber Eats, Postmates and GrubHub.

Customers purchasing a dozen doughnuts will be gifted a free doughnut when picking up from Donut Connection.

Most of the deals are first-come, first-serve.
