South Connellsville police shot and killed a man after they say he fired at them during a welfare check early Tuesday evening in South Connellsville.

Police were called to a home on the 2100 block of Second Street in Connellsville shortly after 4:30 p.m., after a request to check on the welfare of a woman in the residence, according to police.

When they arrived, a 33-year-old man let them in, and they found a 45-year-old woman dead in the basement.

Police said a struggle ensued as they were trying to detain the man, and during the altercation he fired a round from a pistol at officers. They returned fire striking the man, who later died of his injuries.

State police were called to assist with the investigation, which is ongoing.
