An Indiana County woman is charged with endangering the welfare of children after police believe her 1-year-old grandson ingested a psychoactive substance from a vaping device while under her care.
State police said the boy was in the care of Leann Louise Goss, 38, of Indiana, in a home on Lincoln Avenue, White Township, Thursday when Goss found the boy standing next to a bedroom nightstand with “smoke” around him and the vaping device on the floor next to his feet.
Goss called 911, and the boy was taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center for treatment of a suspected non-life-threatening injury, police said.
The boy gained access to the vaping “pen,” which belongs to Goss, while he was out of her sight for an undetermined time, police believe.
Goss also is charged with one count each of possessing a small amount of marijuana and possessing drug paraphernalia. Police said the EVOD vaping device, which they seized while executing a search warrant at the home after 2 p.m., contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive substance in marijuana.
Police said they learned from medical personnel that the child displayed indications of being under the influence of THC. They are investigating how the boy was able to activate the vaping pen and ingest its contents.
Goss was arraigned before District Judge Guy Haberl in Indiana and was placed in the Indiana County Jail after failing to post $25,000 bail. She faces an Aug. 7 preliminary hearing.
