Pennsylvania gas prices hit a record high Saturday, according to AAA.
The average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline in the state rose to $4.08, topping the previous high of $4.05 set in June 2008.
Officials with AAA said earlier in the week that increases in demand for gas along with a reduction in oil supply are contributing to price increases. Oil prices are surging as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine brings uncertainty to the market.
The statewide average on Friday was $4 after an overnight spike of 13 cents per gallon.
“That’s very drastic and a direct reflection of oil prices spiking,” AAA spokesman Jim Garrity said.
In the Pittsburgh area, gas prices set a record for the region with an average cost of $4.06 per gallon, according to AAA data. That’s up more than 10 cents from Friday’s average.
In the eastern part of the state, Philadelphia was at the precipice of a record Saturday afternoon at $4.15, just less than the record of $4.159 set in June 2008.
Pennsylvania’s average continues to hover above the national average of $3.92, which was up about nine cents from the day before.
