The omicron variant of coronavirus has been detected at Penn State’s main campus in State College, university officials announced Monday.

The news comes as officials monitor the coronavirus pandemic in advance of the start of the spring semester, which may begin remotely, Penn State officials said last week.

College officials are urging students and others on campus to follow safety precautions, including wearing masks indoors and those who feel sick should get tested for covid.

The university is also “strongly urging” people to get vaccinated or receive boost shots as an added protection against the omicron variant.

On Dec. 30, officials will provide an update if the university decides to start the spring semester remotely.
