Here are some of the latest news items from this morning, Wednesday, March 19:

Police make arrest in Homestead assault

Allegheny County Police arrested 20-year-old Trevon Jones of Homestead on Monday morning after he allegedly assaulted a man and stole his vehicle.

Homestead police were called to the intersection of Hays Street and West Pine Way in Homestead on Sunday night. A man told police he had recently finished making a delivery in the area when he was flagged down by Jones. He said Jones asked him for money. When he did not provide any money, Jones allegedly assaulted him and stole his vehicle.

The man was transported to an area hospital to be treated for multiple injuries sustained during the assault, police said.

County police were called to assist with the investigation. The stolen vehicle was spotted at the intersection of West 11th and Sarah streets. Police said Jones got out of the car and was taken into custody.

Jones is facing multiple charges including robbery, robbery of a motor vehicle, simple assault and theft by unlawful taking. He is being held at the Allegheny County Jail.

Elevated fire threat declared for Western Pa.

Brush fire season is still in the conversation after the National Weather Service released an elevated fire weather threat for parts of Western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia early Wednesday morning.

A combination of dry conditions, low humidity and breezy winds, paired with the fact Western Pennsylvania has not received consistent rain for several weeks make for favorable conditions for a rapid spread of fires.

The weather service recommends people avoid burning debris and be aware of campfires, lit cigarettes and other things with open flames.

A team with the National Weather Service was out once again Tuesday, surveying damage caused by Sunday’s severe weather.

A preliminary survey near Haddenville, Fayette County, showed damage consistent with an EF-1 tornado, according to NWS.
