A parade will kick off the Mon Valley National Night Out on Aug. 15 in Charleroi.
The Mon Valley Opioid Coalition is organizing the free event which will be held rain or shine at Trustees Park. Vendors will be on hand with food, music, children’s activities, a bicycle raffle and face painting. Drug and alcohol treatment providers will be there to share resources.
The event will start at 5:30 p.m. with the parade including local police officers, medics, firefighters and other community members. They will line up on Second Street and march down McKean Avenue to Eighth Street into the Chamber Plaza parking lot. The rest of the activities will start at 6.
The coalition was created in November 2017. It is aimed at breaking down borders dividing Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties while connecting with community members who are battling a drug addiction to offer support and hope.
Members of the group are working on increasing community education, awareness and access to opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone, while reducing stigma associated with addiction and helping those in need get connected with treatment and recovery. The coalition will provide water and chips to attendees at the National Night Out event.
Other vendors will have food for sale. Donations from businesses are still being accepted. The Westmoreland Drug and Alcohol Commission can be reached at 724-243-2220.
