The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board approved almost $765,000 in grants to 44 schools, community organizations, municipalities and law enforcement organizations, among others, to reduce underage and dangerous drinking.
The grant money will cover projects like enforcement patrols and tactics, awareness campaigns, educational efforts and alternative, alcohol-free activities.
“Since 1999, the PLCB has awarded almost $15 million in alcohol education project grants to schools and universities, non-profits, law enforcement and organizations all across the commonwealth. Funding these projects is making a difference in our communities,” said PLCB chairman Tim Holden. “We are pleased and proud to fund projects that seek to prevent underage and irresponsible drinking.”
The maximum for each one-year grant is $20,000.
Some of the grants include $20,000 awarded to Duquesne University for public service announcements and advertisements established from e-CHUG, an anonymous, interactive web survey that allows college and university students to enter information about their drinking patterns and receive feedback about their use of alcohol.
A grant of $19,500 was made to Point Park University for enforcement patrols during St. Patrick’s Day, educational activities and information at health fairs as well as a bystander intervention program.
The University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg received $8,490 for an education-focused campaign to reduce underage and high-risk drinking and promote responsible consumption through the use of fatal vision goggles (which simulate the effects of intoxication), virtual reality software, conference attendance and a speaker.
