Google is about to make its large footprint in Bakery Square even larger.

Thursday morning, the company announced plans to expand its Bakery Square campus by adding three new floors this year, bringing its total footprint in the building to 320,000 square feet.

Google said it will be taking the first floor and bringing its lobby down to street level, closer to the surrounding East End community.

The plan is part of a larger $7 billion investment by the company in Google offices and data centers across the U.S., including the creation of at least 10,000 new full-time Google jobs across the country.

“I believe a lasting economic recovery will come from local communities, and the people and small businesses that give them life,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google and Alphabet. “Google wants to be a part of that recovery. That’s why we plan to invest over $7 billion in offices and data centers across the U.S. and create at least 10,000 new full-time Google jobs in the U.S. this year.”

Google has maintained a presence in Pittsburgh since 2006. The Bakery Square office employs 760 people. The company refers to them as “Googlers.”

“Google has always been a wonderful community partner, and their latest investment in Pittsburgh is yet another great sign for our residents and future of our city,” said Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto.

In Google’s nationwide Economic Impact Report released Thursday, Pittsburgh language learning company Duolingo was highlighted in a case study that details how they used digital tools to increase their online presence and reach customers.

According to Google, over 652,000 businesses in Pennsylvania have connected directly with customers using Google, including Duolingo, American Hats in Philadelphia and SleepPhones in Erie.

“Pennsylvania is proud to be one of the places Google has called home for the past decade, and we look forward to seeing its continued growth in Pittsburgh,” said Gov. Tom Wolf.
