Dennis Hall, one of nine men rescued from the Quecreek Mine collapse in 2002, died Friday. He was 68.
Hall and eight other coal miners were trapped 240 feet below ground for 77 hours when the Quecreek mine collapsed in Somerset County in July 2002.
“We lost a unique individual who was not only a hero, but he was highly respected among his fellow miners, which is one of the best accolades I think anyone can say about fellow miners,” said William Arnold, executive director of the Quecreek Mine Rescue Foundation. “The fact that he was highly respected among his coworkers is tribute enough. I think that speaks volumes.”
Hall, of Benscreek, died Friday at Conemaugh Medical Center, according to his obituary. His obituary did not list a cause of death.
He loved to hunt, fish and make knives, his obituary said.
A service will be held Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel in Johnstown.
