Covid-related staffing shortages will close a school in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh this week.

St. Gregory Catholic Elementary School in Zelienople will switch to remote learning after seven staffers tested positive for covid-19, Principal Erin Rice said.

“Although we seemed to have conquered the odds and provided in-person learning for over a year and a half through this pandemic, I am afraid that we are not invincible and covid has finally forced me to make some difficult decisions,” Rice said in a letter to school families.

The school was not able to find enough substitute teachers to keep classes open.

Students can collect school materials on Monday. Classes will be held online Tuesday to Friday.

Rice thanked families for their patience.

“I recognize the hardships this will cause for some of our families,” Rice said. “However, I believe that it is the right step to take for the health and safety of our families, employees and the community at large.”

Michelle Peduto, director of diocesan schools, said she expects this month will require a lot of flexibility from families.

“We are in continued consultation with local physicians and health agencies,” Peduto said. “Our goal remains to provide in-person instruction.”
