A Fayette County inmate who escaped from a prison van and stole a BMW near Uniontown Monday morning was captured about three hours later outside Republic, state police said.

State police in Uniontown issued an alert just after 11 a.m. Monday for Justin Charles Shea, 32, of Oliver.

State police said Shea escaped from a prisoner transport van on Route 21 in German Township in the area of the Double T Bar and stole a 2003 black BMW.

Shea was described as wearing an orange jumpsuit, blue jacket, no shoes and was shackled when he fled.

Police said he headed east on Route 21. State troopers reported he was taken into custody just after 2 p.m.

Shea had a probation revocation hearing scheduled today in common pleas court in Uniontown, according to court dockets. In 2018, he was convicted on fleeing and eluding, retail theft and drug-related charges.
