U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly said Friday that he has tested positive for covid-19.

The Republican from Butler, 71, said his symptoms are not severe and that he will continue to work from home until they subside completely.

“My symptoms remain mild, and I will serve the 16th District from home until I fully recover,” Kelly said in a statement. “Additionally, my staff is teleworking and still available to constituents who need assistance.”

After developing flu-like symptoms earlier this week, Kelly called his primary care doctor to order a test for covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. He said he took the test at a drive-thru testing facility at Butler Memorial Hospital.

The results came back positive on Friday afternoon.

Kelly quarantined himself at home while waiting for the test results, so he was not in Washington for the House’s final vote on the $2 trillion relief package related to the pandemic’s impacts, referred to as the CARES Act. Kelly said he would have supported the legislation had he been present to vote.

“As our country rallies together to slow the spread of this virus and ultimately defeat it, we must ensure that this public health emergency does not turn into a long-term economic crisis,” Kelly said in statement Friday morning. “The CARES Act is a key step toward that goal.”
