Beer at Beaver Stadium: Penn State board approves alcohol sales
Happy Valley might have just become happier – Penn State’s Board of Trustees has approved alcohol sales for all 21-and-older fans in Beaver Stadium.
Numerous beer stations will be placed throughout the stadium, though none in close proximity to the student section.
Fans will be able to purchase up to two beers at one time. Those who purchase alcohol will receive a wristband so the university can verify that only those 21 and older are drinking.
Currently, proposed prices are $10 for 16 oz domestic cans and $12 for specialty selections of beer.
All gameday sales will end after the third quarter.
The university plans to add upward of 300 staff members who are tasked with oversight, enforcement and operation of alcohol sales. Employees will be required to undergo alcohol training.
It is not clear when alcohol sales will begin.
Beaver Stadium has sold alcohol in its club and suites areas since 2016.
The university hopes that controlled alcohol sales will reduce alcohol-related incidents on game days. According to Penn State Athletics, the University of Texas saw an 87% reduction in these incidents since it began selling alcohol, and Maryland saw a 71% decline.
Eight other Big Ten schools sell alcohol at football games.
