National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in April is postponed, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The April 25 date will be rescheduled after the coronavirus pandemic recedes and the national emergency is lifted, according to the agency.

During the most recent Take Back Day held Oct. 26, nearly 442 tons of prescription medication were collected at about 4,900 sites nationwide. Agency officials expected a large turnout for the event planned for later this month, according to a statement.

The events provide citizens a way to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescription medication in an effort to prevent those pills from ending up in the wrong hands. The administration holds two Take Back Days annually.

The agency has collected more than 6,000 tons since the event started in 2010. Some collection sites are available year-round and can be located at apps2.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/pubdispsearch.
