A Michigan man was arrested in Pine following a traffic stop after police learned that the vehicle he was driving was reported stolen from a used car dealer in Cleveland.
Derek Arlie Peaters, 49, of Flint, Mich., was charged with a felony count of receiving stolen property in connection with the April 23 incident, according to court records.
Peaters was released from custody after posting a nonmonetary bond. He faces a preliminary hearing on May 11 before District Judge William Wagner.
A Northern Regional Police officer stopped Peaters near the intersection of Perry Highway and Bonnie View Drive shortly after 9 p.m. after he saw the black Audi A4 he was driving run a red light, according to a criminal complaint.
All the markings on the car were covered over with black electrical tape and the car did not have a license plate, the complaint said.
Police said Peaters handed the officer an Ohio license plate and told him he “just bought it from someone in Cleveland with cash,” according to his arrest papers.
Peaters was unable to tell police where he bought the car and did not have any paperwork or registration for the vehicle, the complaint said.
Peaters was arrested after a dispatcher checked the Ohio registration he showed police and learned that the car was stolen from a dealer in Cleveland.
A flat head screwdriver was found in Peaters pocket and there was a crowbar between the door and driver’s seat, police said.
