Investigators believe a struggle over a handgun led to a shooting in Avalon on Thursday afternoon that wounded a man and a teenage boy.

The 23-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was in critical condition at an area hospital, according to Allegheny County Police, who assisted Avalon officers.

The 17-year-old boy apparently was grazed in the head and was treated and released at a separate hospital, police said.

Avalon police responded to the shooting just after noon and found the man at the scene in the 500 block of Girard Avenue.

Police recovered the handgun involved in the dispute. Investigators are consulting with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed against either of the individuals, whom police didn’t identify.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the county police tip line at 1-833-255-8477. Callers can remain anonymous.
