Volunteers sought to help Plum fire departments
Volunteers are being sought to help Plum’s four fire departments.
Councilwoman Vicki Roessler said she has started “Friends of the Plum Fire Departments” to help the Holiday Park, Logans Ferry, Renton and Unity volunteer fire departments. They would do things such as selling tickets and working fundraisers, fish fries and gun bashes, she said.
The group recently had about 15 members. Roessler said she hopes to grow it to about 50.
Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Roessler at vroessler@plumboro.com or any member of borough council.
Verona renews trash collection contract
Verona will stick with County Hauling for trash collection at an increased cost.
Council approved a three-year, $1.2 million contract with the hauler May 28. The deal also provides for fourth- and fifth-year options at an additional cost.
Trash bills have jumped 23%, from about $17 a month to $22. Costs will go up 7% each year of the deal.
Collection day will take place on Friday instead of Thursday.
Unlike some neighboring communities, such as Plum, Verona has not moved to automated collection. The borough’s tight alleys make the use of a mechanical arm impossible, according to Manager Stefanie Woolford.
Residents can view the full garbage and recycling rules at veronaborough.org/garbage-recycling.
Plum Senior Community Center gets $45.8K grant
Plum Senior Community Center will receive a $45,800 grant to help with improvements and renovations.

There are 484 Area Agency on Aging-affiliated senior community centers in the state providing meals, transportation, education, counseling and exercise programs.
