Car seat safety check

A free car seat safety check event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24 at Holiday Park VFD, 415 Abers Creek Road, Plum.

Along with seat checks, featured will be free hot dogs and drinks, tours of the fire station, and EMS, fire and police vehicles on display.

Touch a Truck

Oakmont Lions Club has partnered with the Oakmont Carnegie Library to present the 2022 Fred Favo Memorial Touch a Truck from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 25.

The event is expected to have more than 20 different types of trucks — from police, fire and construction vehicles to a bookmobile — lined up along Allegheny River Boulevard from Washington to Maryland avenues.

The library will have a variety of children’s games.

Admission is $5 per person. Children younger than 12 get in free.

The event is named in memory of longtime public servant and business man Fred Favo, who served on Oakmont council from 1964 to 2003, including 34 years as council president. Favo was the borough treasurer from 2004 to 2019.

Plum AARP meets

Plum AARP will hold its first meeting of the new season beginning at noon Sept. 13 at Unity Community Church, 215 Unity Trestle Road.

Following the meeting and cake and coffee, Twan Moore will entertain members with his smooth rhythm and blues style.

The group meets the second Tuesday of each month from September through June at the church. Dues are $10 per year. For more information, call Mary Lou at 724-327-8265.

RCAC hosts ‘Rags to Riches’

Riverview Community Action Corp. is hosting an informative program, “From Rags to Riches,” at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at 501 Second St., Oakmont. The entrance is on Delaware Avenue.

The program focuses on Jessie Mathews Vann, wife of Robert Vann, editor of The Pittsburgh Courier.

After her parents died in the 1890s, she was shunted from relative to relative, once even abandoned in the street.

After being beaten by an aunt, she moved in with her brother and in 1904 graduated with honors from Harrisburg High School. After the death of her husband, Jessie assumed many of his duties at the Courier while serving on several national boards.

Admission to the RCAC program is free and open to the public. Call 412-828-1062 to reserve a seat.

Holy Family hosts senior fair

The Holy Family Parish SOS Ministry team is hosting a senior fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 20 at Our Lady of Joy Church, 2000 O’Block Road, Plum.

The event is being presented by the National Aging in Place Council, which will provide free flu shots and blood pressure screenings. In addition, 17 businesses will be providing information on a variety of topics of interest to seniors. Visit each of the tables for drawings and giveaways.
