A Pittsburgh woman faces charges after police said she ran down her fiancé with a car Friday after a night of drinking, critically injuring the man.

Tina McAfee, 44, of the city’s Knoxville neighborhood, is charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault.

Police said they responded to Knox Avenue around 11:45 p.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter notification, but did not find any shooting victims. Instead, a criminal complaint filed in the case said police found McAfee standing next to a silver Kia Soul that had crashed through a fence and into a backyard.

Police said McAfee told investigators that she and her fiancé had been driving home after drinking with a friend when he began hitting her, according to the complaint. She said he jumped out of the vehicle, and “she might have hit him” with her car, the complaint said.

Video evidence told a different story, police said.

Police said surveillance footage from the area showed the Kia Soul stopping along Grape Street, where someone got out, slammed the door and began walking on the sidewalk. Seconds later, the footage showed the Kia driving onto the sidewalk and running over the person who had just gotten out, police said. The Kia then drove out of camera view.

McAfee’s fiancé was found in a nearby home on Grape Street, injured and “unable to respond to officers’ questions,” according to the complaint. He was taken to UPMC Mercy in critical condition. Police said he had suffered a collapsed lung, facial fractures and was placed on a ventilator.

McAfee was taken into custody Sunday, court records show. District Judge Eileen Conroy denied bail for McAfee at a preliminary arraignment, citing the attempted homicide charge. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 7. Court records did not list an attorney for McAfee as of Monday afternoon.
