Pittsburgh police took a man into custody after a hit-and-run crash and SWAT standoff early Sunday in the East Hills section of the city.
Officers on patrol before 2:45 a.m. witnessed the head-on crash involving the man and a female driver in a second vehicle, who wasn’t harmed and refused medical attention.
Police followed the male driver from the scene in the 1800 block of Calistoga Street to a residence in the 2500 block of adjoining Park Hill Drive, where he barricaded himself inside on an upper floor.
According to police, a SWAT team was called in because other residents were inside the building, including a boy with special needs.
Officers stayed with the boy, who was sleeping in the basement and whose family requested that he not be disturbed, police said. All other residents safely left the home.
A K-9 unit was deployed when the suspect refused verbal commands to come out of the house. Police said he finally surrendered without incident at 4 a.m.
Police didn’t identify the suspect, whom they said faces multiple charges.
