Pittsburgh’s South Side Flats is set to get a new outdoor sports court for basketball and pickleball.

The Planning Commission on Tuesday approved plans for the new court on the East Lawn at SouthSide Works.

The court will be able to accommodate either basketball or pickleball. The sport being offered could alternate depending on the day of the week, said Chris McCune, vice president of construction and development with South Side-based real estate developer SomeraRoad.

“We know basketball’s always been exciting, but we know pickleball’s been sweeping the country as a craze,” he said.

McCune told commissioners he anticipates there will be some type of online reservation system through the SouthSide Works website, but details on how reservations for the court will be set up are still being finalized.

Plans call for a 10-foot fence around the court, a bike rack, benches and a new sidewalk on what now is a vacant grassy lot.

The court will be at the easternmost portion of Tunnel Park, according to plans presented to the city’s Planning Commission. The site connects to Hot Metal Bridge on the east and Three Rivers Heritage Trail on the west. It’s situated between parts of the American Eagle corporate offices and the Ingot parking garage.
