Pittsburgh officials on Wednesday launched a new online tool that aims to encourage residents to learn more about the city’s budget.

The online tool allows residents to find information about the budget process and where money goes. City officials touted the initiative as a way to increase transparency and awareness regarding the city’s finances.

“By providing this information in an easily digestible way, we are creating a better Pittsburgh where every resident has access to the information they need to engage with city government in a meaningful way,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.

The online budget hub includes a menu of interactive budget charts with near-real-time data showing how money is allocated across different city departments. The hub uses videos, animations and data visualizations to provide a non-technical, simple explanation of the city’s finances, the city said.

It also provides a forum where residents can submit feedback and budget recommendations by filling out a short online form.

“Our goal is to be sure that people have a clear understanding of what we spend their taxes on,” Deputy Director of budgeting Patrick Cornell said.
