Tariq Mahdi, 29, is in custody after fleeing from Allegheny County sheriff’s detectives on Sept. 30.

A Friday car chase led to the apprehension of a Pittsburgh fugitive with multiple warrants against him.

Tariq Mahdi, 29, is in custody after fleeing from Allegheny County sheriff’s detectives. Mahdi faces numerous charges, including burglary, strangulation and aggravated assault.

Detectives identified the vehicle that Mahdi was driving on Friday in the McKees Rocks area. When they approached Mahdi, he fled, driving until he crashed on the upper deck of the Fort Pitt Bridge.

Mahdi then attempted to flee on foot, but police quickly caught him, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Today’s arrest is another indication of the danger that law enforcement often faces when trying to apprehend people,” Sheriff Kevin Kraus said in a news release. “I’m pleased that my detectives and deputies were able to get this individual off the street and that no one was injured in the process.”

Mahdi was named on three Allegheny County bench warrants and three Penn Hills arrest warrants.

After the Friday chase, he will now face additional charges.
