Pittsburgh residents who haven’t paid their property taxes now have a little extra time to get a discount.
City Council on Tuesday approved legislation that pushes back the deadline for a 2% discount on real estate taxes. People now must pay by Feb. 20, or have their payments postmarked by that date, to get the discount.
Initially, the deadline had been Feb. 12 — though a misprint on bills sent to residents listed the deadline as Feb. 10.
City leaders pushed the deadline back because of a delay in bills being mailed to residents. Officials said they wanted to give residents an opportunity to receive the discount despite that error.
“We are thankful that City Council moved swiftly to help ensure that our residents had adequate time to take advantage of discounted property tax rates,” Mayor Ed Gainey said in a statement.

Council members on Tuesday unanimously approved the legislation to change the deadline for the tax discount. Council members Theresa Kail-Smith, D-West End, and Anthony Coghill, D-Beechview, were not present for the vote.
