Two North Hills School District students who participated in hockey tryouts Saturday have tested positive for covid-19, district officials said Thursday.
The North Hills Hockey Club held the tryouts at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center — tryouts that were not sanctioned by the school district, according to a statement from the district. Two of the students who attended tryouts have tested positive for the virus since then.
District officials said the hockey club has notified all the players and families who were at the tryouts.
“As we enter the Fourth of July weekend and cases continue to climb in Allegheny County, NHSD reminds students and families to be vigilant about protecting the health, safety and well-being of yourself and those around you,” they said in a statement.
The district on Thursday also announced it would cancel all school activities through the weekend, including marching band and cross country practices and drama club events. School officials will decide by Monday whether extracurricular will resume next week.
The announcements came the same day Allegheny County health officials announced a record 233 new covid-19 cases countywide — a number that doubled the prior day’s new cause count and represented the third straight day of triple digit counts.
