PWSA: Water in shuttered buildings could contain contaminants like Legionella
The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority is warning building owners that water in structures shuttered during the coronavirus pandemic could contain contaminants.
PWSA advised owners Wednesday to develop a water management plan before reopening buildings for employees and the public.
Water standing in pipes for long periods can contain contaminants, including Legionella and other bacteria, according to PWSA.
“Each building system is unique, and building owners may want to consult a professional to determine any necessary actions,” the authority said in a statement.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Environmental Science and Policy Research Institute and International Code Council all offer guidance on disinfecting water lines in buildings that have been vacant during the pandemic.
PWSA said it is monitoring disinfectant levels and flushing public distribution lines to maintain water quality for building systems.
