Pittsburgh police have charged an 82-year-old man with corruption of minors, accusing him of asking two young neighbor children to undress for him while he was volunteering for a child care center.
Investigators suspect there are likely more victims.
Reid Reading, of Squirrel Hill, volunteered for five years at the Kentucky Avenue Child Care Center in Shadyside, police said. He no longer volunteers there. Reid worked with pre-schoolers, kindergartners and first graders, and part of his duties involved going to the homes of children from the center to read to them.
Police alleged that Reading on Aug. 9 was at the home of a woman and her three children — an infant and two daughters, ages 6 and 8 — volunteering for the child care center. The woman left the room to put the infant down for a nap and, when she returned, noticed the 6-year-old putting her clothes back on, according to police.
The child told her mother that Reading had asked her to take her clothes off, saying he wanted to “see everything,” according to the criminal complaint filed June 4. Her 8-year-old sister corroborated the incident, police said.
Police said Reading later violated a no-contact order with the family.
Investigators believe it’s highly likely Reading has victimized other children. He was barred from volunteering at the child care center after he was seen “kissing a girl inappropriately,” according to police spokesman Chris Togneri.
