Pittsburgh is set to spend $407,000 for design work on six fire stations scheduled for remodeling in 2020, according to the Mayor’s Office.
City Council will introduce legislation on Tuesday to approve the funding.
Unions representing fire, police and paramedics have complained for years about problems at stations, including sinkholes, leaking roofs and sewage backups. The city for years neglected maintenance on its buildings because of financial constraints.
Massaro Construction Management Services assessed about 300 city structures in 2015 and estimated it would cost about $60 million to repair them all.
Mayor Bill Peduto budgeted nearly $11 million in 2019 for facility repairs, including $3.9 million for public safety.
Renovations at the six fire stations would include improved bunk rooms, toilets, showers, locker rooms, kitchens, utilities and accommodations for disabled people.
The city plans renovations at Stations 19 in Swisshelm Park, 23 in Carrick, 26 in Brookline, 34 in Perry North, 35 in Brighton Heights and 38 in Northview Heights.
