Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto declares a state of emergency in the city inside of the City County Building on Friday, March 13, 2020.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto’s Office announced plans Tuesday to distribute about $12.6 million in federal grant money to more than a dozen organizations that are helping cash-strapped residents and businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

The plans include $4.2 million in Emergency Solutions Grants to help fund homeless shelter improvements, homeless prevention services and housing assistance for low-income residents.

The city also will distribute about $8.4 million in Community Development Block Grants that Congress approved as part of its first pandemic relief package. The money will go to 13 organizations providing services ranging from small business loans to free food distributions.

“This funding will deliver critically needed assistance to many who are suffering during this pandemic, from fears about rent to purchasing food to those experiencing domestic violence,” Peduto said in a statement.

The funding allocations are subject to City Council approval. Council is expected to introduce legislation on May 5.
