Pittsburgh is expanding its Christmas tree recycling program this year to include 12 drop-0ff locations across the city.

Residents must remove all ornaments, netting, tinsel and tree stands before depositing trees at recycling locations. The trees will be chipped for pine mulch and offered to residents in the spring.

City officials encourage residents to recycle trees rather than leave them at curbside for garbage pickup. The program is part of Pittsburgh’s zero-waste goals.

Pittsburgh last year had 10 drop-off sites and collected more than 21 tons of trees.

Residents can deposit trees at the following nine locations around the clock from Dec. 26 to Jan. 26:

  • Friendship: Baum Grove Parklet, 400 Roup Ave. (off Fairmont Avenue).
  • Deutschtown: Sue Murray Swimming Pool Parking Lot, Cedar and Stockton Avenues (enter off Stockton).
  • Brookline: Brookline Recreation Center, 1400 Oakridge St.
  • Brighton Heights: Jack Stack parking lot, 600 Brighton Woods Road.
  • Squirrel Hill South: Prospect Drive roundabout in Schenley Park.
  • Highland Park: Highland Park volleyball court parking lot near 151 Lake Drive.
  • Oakwood: Oakwood Park ball field on Noblestown Road.
  • South Side: Riverfront Park lower parking lot.
  • Middle Hill: Kennard Park at Kirkpatrick and Reed streets.

Residents can drop off trees at the following three locations year-round Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.:

  • Hazelwood: Department of Public Works Third Division, Melanchton Avenue off of the 5200 block of Second Avenue.
  • Homewood West: DPW Second Division, North Dallas and Hamilton avenues.
  • Elliott: DPW Fifth Division, 1330 Hassler Street, off of Herschel & Steuben streets near Herschel Park.
