University of Pittsburgh Police have beefed up their patrols in the area of a reported burglary and attempted sexual assault of a university student early Friday, a university spokesman said.

The incident happened at 4:15 a.m. in the 200 block of Oakland Avenue, according to a report posted on the Pitt police website.

The victim told investigators that a man she didn’t know entered her residence through a rear door while she was sleeping, and attempted to sexually assault her. After a brief struggle, the man left through the rear door and fled on foot northbound on Oakland Avenue, toward Sennott Street, the report said.

The victim suffered minor injuries. There was no sign of forced entry to the residence, the report said.

Pitt police described the suspect as a black man in his early 20s. He is described as 6 feet tall with an athletic build and short hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt, camouflage colored shorts and black boots.

Friday’s incident took place on the same street as an attempted burglary last month.

The previous incident occurred shortly after 12:45 a.m. June 30 in the 400 block of Oakland Avenue.

According to the crime alert from that incident, the victim told investigators someone she didn’t know attempted to climb in her unlocked bedroom window. When she screamed, the person fled on foot eastbound toward Oakland Avenue. No injuries were reported, there were no signs of forced entry, and nothing was taken from the residence.

Pittsburgh Police are investigating both incidents. Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz said it’s too soon to determine whether the two incidents are related.

Anyone with information concerning either incident should call Pittsburgh Police (Zone 4) at 412-422-6520 or university police at 412-624-2121.
