Noted artist Jim Pollock has designed original artwork for Commonplace Coffee, which has seven Pittsburgh-area cafes.

An artist noted for his work with the jam band Phish is teaming up with Pittsburgh’s Commonplace Coffee for a line of limited-edition merchandise.

Jim Pollock, who has been creating iconic art for the music industry and many brands and businesses for more than 30 years, has designed coffee mug artwork that adorns a T-shirt and tote bag available for pre-order through July 24 at commonplacecoffee.com.

Pollock is new to Pittsburgh and says he wanted to build connections and offer support to local businesses during the pandemic.

“I recently relocated my studio from Chicago to Pittsburgh, and my partner Jeni relocated from New York. We haven’t gotten too acquainted with the city or its local businesses, but we did make sure to seek out the best cup of coffee — Commonplace,” Pollock said. “When the stay-at-home order went into effect and a lot of local businesses were forced to close or operate with a skeleton crew, we wanted to find a way to help.

“Jeni and I reached out to Commonplace to see if they might be interested in using my art for promotion.” he said. “We’re all in this together, and we wanted to do our part; we wanted to make sure Commonplace was still available for us and everyone else to enjoy.”

Pollock has created artwork for Phish since he attended Goddard College in Vermont with band members in the 1980s. He also has designed for Ben & Jerry’s, Burton, Magic Hat, Celestial Seasonings, HeadCount, Primus, Disco Biscuits, Umphrey’s McGee and other bands.

“We’re so incredibly humbled that such a well-known artist would reach out and support what we’re doing. His association with such an amazing group of musicians, Phish, is incredibly helpful to Commonplace at this time,” said TJ Fairchild, owner of Commonplace Coffee.

Pre-orders of two or more items will receive $5 off. This deal applies only to the special-edition merchandise and cannot be combined with other product orders through the website.
