The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership is changing the location and day of operation for its popular Market Square farmers market as a safety precaution during the coronavirus pandemic.

The partnership announced Friday that the market will open May 17 in a parking lot at 11th Street and Waterfront Place in the Strip District. It will be open every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, for at least two months.

Admission is free, but the partnership is limiting the number of shoppers permitted to enter and stand in line at booths. Shoppers will be required to wear a facial mask. People can order and pay for products online. A list of vendors and information about the market can be found here.

“Given the ongoing crisis, reinventing the Farmers Market at a new time and location allows us to safely provide a great community benefit while also addressing social distance and safety concerns,” Jeremy Waldrup, the partnership’s president and CEO, said in a statement.

The market in its 16th year features locally grown and organic produce, products and foods provided by about 20 vendors. It could move back to Market Square as coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the Pittsburgh Redbud Project on May 17 will continue an annual tradition of giving away daffodil bulbs and redbud tree saplings. The bulbs were removed from planters in Pittsburgh area.
