A weekly farmers market in Pittsburgh’s Hill District is settling into its new location in the neighborhood.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank moved its Green Grocer’s Hill District stop to outside a shuttered Shop ‘n Save at Centre Heldman Plaza along Centre Avenue at the beginning of the month and will be open again this week.

The previous stop was several blocks up the street at the Thelma Lovette YMCA.

The mobile farmers market will be in the former Shop ‘n Save parking lot every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“We had a very warm reception during our first stop at the Shop ‘n Save lot in the Hill District,” Jordan Bailley, one of the mobile market coordinators for the Green Grocer, said in a statement. “We believe healthy, fresh food is a human right and all communities deserve access to food. This new location for our Hill District market is right along a bus line, on a flat surface and near other businesses creating greater access for this community.”

Bailley thanked the Thelma Lovette YMCA for hosting the market before its move. He said the food bank anticipated increased sales at this new location.

“Bringing our mobile market of fresh fruits and vegetables and other core grocery items to the Centre Heldman Plaza — a more visible site — enables us to better serve the community,” Lisa Scales, the food bank president and CEO, said last week when the food bank announced it was moving the market’s location.

The market features fresh produce, frozen meats, dry goods and other grocery items.

The Shop ‘n Save closed last year because of dwindling sales, leaving the neighborhood without a grocery store. The Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority, which owns the plaza, agreed to provide space to the farmers market.
