Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Just Harvest are teaming up again for Empty Bowls, an event consisting of some simple things.

The event offers a meal of soup and bread, designed to remind people of the one in eight residents of Allegheny County who are facing hunger. The event is March 15 at Rodef Shalom in Shadyside. It’s the 25th anniversary of the event.

Ann Roth, co-founder of Empty Bowls in Pittsburgh, joined the food bank’s Brian Gulish on this week’s food podcast to talk about the event and what attendees can expect.

Roth discussed a book written by Billy Shore of Pittsburgh, who raised millions of dollars for hunger over the years. Roth discussed how she was inspired by Shore’s ability to raise millions without any experience in food and hunger issues.

“I thought, if he could raise millions without any experience in food and hunger issues, I can do the same. I can raise a thousand dollars,” Roth said.

Roth and Gulish discuss the beginnings of Empty Bowls and Pittsburgh’s role in it. Listen to the podcast by clicking the link below.
