The peregrine falcons nesting atop the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Leaning have their first egg of the season.
Hope and Terzo last year raised two healthy chicks banded by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Monitors spotted their first egg of the season Monday afternoon while watching a live web cam made possible by the National Aviary. Details were reported by Kate St. John in her blog “Outside My Window.”
Other area falcons are getting active as well.
Along the Allegheny River, the Tarentum falcons were active inside their nest box under the Tarentum Bridge on Monday. Photographer Dave Brooke photographed the birds at their box. There is no web cam there. At the Westinghouse Bridge in Pittsburgh, Dana Nesiti photographed that pair mating, according to the Facebook group Falconuts.
Other pairs are nesting in the region, with nesting reports forthcoming.
Since the birds are threatened, St. John and the game commission will track their breeding progress through the spring.
