Cheron Shelton, acquitted of murder in Wilkinsburg shooting, to remain in prison pending federal trial

A Homewood man acquitted of murder earlier this year will remain in federal prison while he awaits trial on federal gun charges, a judge decided Monday.

Cheron Shelton, 33, was indicted Feb. 25 on charges he was in possession of a gun despite being a convicted felon.

The charge came less than two weeks after a jury found Shelton not guilty of six counts of homicide in connection with a fatal shooting in Wilkinsburg.

Investigators searched Shelton’s mother’s home March 12, 2016, in connection with the mass shooting three days earlier. They found a .22-caliber rifle and .22-caliber ammunition, according to the indictment.

Shelton had previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver, a felony, and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.

Federal Magistrate Judge Lisa Pupo Lenihan on Monday ordered Shelton to be held pending trial.

No date has been set for the next hearing in the case.
