Streets in Pittsburgh’s Downtown, Uptown, Oakland and Squirrel Hill neighborhoods will close Saturday and Sunday and Port Authority of Allegheny County bus routes will be detoured during the 42nd running of the annual Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race, officials said.
Street closures on Saturday during the Dollar Bank Junior Great Race will begin at 10 a.m. and include Fort Duquesne Boulevard from Commonwealth Place to 7th Street; Stanwix Street, Cecil Place and Sixth Street from Fort Duquesne Boulevard to Penn Avenue; and Commonwealth Place. The riverside portion of Fort Duquesne Boulevard will remain open to traffic.
Commonwealth Place will remain closed until 1 p.m. The others are expected to reopen at noon.
The junior race runs from Point State Park along Liberty Avenue, Stanwix Street, Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Commonwealth Place.
Sunday closures begin at 6:30 a.m. and include portions of Beechwood Boulevard, Forbes, Morewood Fifth and Liberty avenues and Commonwealth Place. They are scheduled to reopen by 11 a.m.
Runners will follow Beechwood Boulevard, Forbes and Fifth Avenues and the Boulevard of the Allies to Point State Park.
The Port Authority of Allegheny County will detour more than 30 bus routes on Saturday and Sunday.
Spokesman Adam Brandolph reported that detours would be in effect Saturday from around 10 a.m. until noon. Sunday detours will begin at the start of bus service and continue until around 1 p.m.
Two special bus routes will operate during Sunday’s 5k and 10k races providing services between Downtown and Oakland and Squirrel Hill.
Mayor Richard Caliguiri, who died in 1988 of amyloidosis, established the race in 1977 as a community “fun run.” The city donates $1 from each registration fee to the Richard S. Caliguiri Amyloidosis Fund, which supports medical research.
