Penn Hills officials plan to spend about $1.8 million to repair 14 streets and other sections of the municipality.

Council awarded contracts of about $1.35 million, $305,700 and $156,300 to Shields Asphalt Paving of Bakerstown at a special meeting May 25.

Part of the street reconstruction will be paid for through federal Community Development Block Grant money as well as a state multi-modal grant.

The municipality was awarded a $2.5 million multi-modal grant, which requires the municipality to pay a 30% match, for a total of $3.25 million committed to road repairs over three years.

Scott Shephard, Penn Hills’ public works and parks superintendent, said he is familiar with the contractor.

“Shields has done paving for us in the past and has been a good contractor to work with,” Shephard said. “We have listed streets to be paved in the past.

“With prices the way they have been going, I don’t like to say a road is guaranteed to be paved until after it’s done. But we are confident that we will complete everything that was approved by council.”

Paving may begin in the next few weeks. It is unclear when it would be completed.

Streets to be paved this summer include:

• Greenridge Drive, from end to end;

• Oakview Drive, from Greenridge Drive to its end;

• Blanchar Drive, from Greenridge Drive to its end,

• Highview Drive, from Greenridge Drive to Hunter Drive;

• Golden Gate Drive, from Hamil Road to its end;
